Almost 20 years ago I developed a severe case of sciatica that left me in chronic pain and completely changed my life. In fact what initially started out as a mild pain in my left glute muscle, eventually over time reached all the way into my left calf with pain 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There were times that the level of pain was manageable and there were times that the pain was much worse, but it was always there. It was relentless... and eventually it changed my lifestyle completely. At the age of 37 I had been diagnosed with two herniated disks (L4-L5 and L5-S1), osteoarthritic spurs on my lumbar vertebrae, and degenerative disc disease. Surgery was not an option for me due to a "previous condition rider" that had been placed on my health insurance a few years earlier when I switched to a new company. Without medical coverage I was on my own financially, and as a self-pay patient I was forced to seek out treatment that I could afford.

I was devastated, I couldn't believe it... And the non coverage of my back went beyond just the surgery. Remember the MRI I had done? They billed me $1200 just for that. They billed me for the doctor's visits as well. No coverage meant no physical therapy, no prescriptions... nothing.
Over the next several months I tried virtually every treatment I could afford. I might as well have had sucker stamped on my forehead because if someone told me they could help me, and I had the money... I bought it.
I went through over 15 different chiropractors, 2 osteopaths, acupuncture, inversion boots, deep tissue massage, rolfing, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), hypnosis, yoga, stretching, physical therapists, meditation, and healing magnets. Most treatment programs approach dysfunctions of the back in a one dimensional way. In other words, a chiropractor may prescribe multiple adjustments over time... an orthopedic doctor might recommend surgery... and a physical therapist will treat back and sciatic pain with stretches and exercises.

Not only does our spinal column need to be stabilized while healing, but support is also needed by gradually strengthening the muscles that surround the spine for a long term solution. 3. Alignment and Flexibility: A large and complex group of soft tissues completely wrap our spinal structure. By crisscrossing and completely encasing the spine they provide support for the upper body and hold the body upright. Human beings were designed to move, and when soft tissue is subjected to extended periods of inactivity these tissues can shrink or become tight causing an asymmetrical imbalance on the skeletal structure it surrounds. Over time these imbalances in our muscles and ligaments can cause problems with the other components of our back.
